Careers ashore
For those who would like to work within our exciting and modern industry, but who get a little bit sea sick, there are other options. The maritime industry employs a quarter of a million people in the UK. You could work in a port and manage the movement of 90% of our trade as it flows through the gateway. You could work for the coast guard ensuring the safety of our shores. You could work for an admiralty law firm and prepare to defend your client’s corner in the highest courts. You could work for a shipping company managing the safe operation of a fleet of ships. The opportunities are endless.

To best arm yourself for the emloyment market, gaining a degree in a maritime subject is normally best. Degrees in Nautical Science or Marine Policy are offered by Southampton, Cardiff, Greenwich, City, Liverpool John Moores, Newcastle and Glasgow Universities.

But it is up to you where you go in the future, the only advice we can give is: Sea’s the future.
