“Representing the island communities of Orkney and Shetland I recognise how vital the shipping industry is. A strong and prosperous shipping industry is, however, something that is crucially important to our whole nation's economic prosperity. I share the frustration of many that the importance of the industry is too often overlooked. As the need to cut carbon emissions becomes ever more urgent, shipping will have a vital role to play. The Government must do more to ensure the viability of the British Shipping industry. World Maritime Day can make a significant contribution to highlighting the actual and potential contribution that the maritime sector can make. I wish everyone involved in World Maritime Day every success.”
