THE MARITIME ‘‘ENTERPRISE’’ GAME
12 September 2007
Given that learning about ‘Enterprise’ is now a statutory requirement for all 14-16 year olds and that students must learn about business operations, demonstrate enterprising skills and qualities and understand a range of economic ideas such as, cost, profit, risk, investment and customer-supplier relationships, anything that makes such complexities easier to understand has got to be a winner. The ‘Enterprise’ Game, which aims to bring these elements together in an accessible format, was developed by Halton Education Business Partnership, Cheshire, but World Maritime Day sees the launch of a nautical version – The ‘Maritime Enterprise’ Game.
Sponsored by 28 organisations with connections to the maritime world – whose logos appear on the board - and developed by the Sea Vision NW Careers Group, the game revolves around the delivery of containers to customers via ships, ports and then onward transportation by truck. As in real life, whilst entrepreneurial skills are vital to success, there is also an element of chance: the roll of the dice and the “shipshape” cards – similar to Monopoly’s Chance cards – can take their toll on otherwise astute proto-shipping magnates.
To be piloted by secondary schools in the North West this autumn, the game will be officially launched onboard HQS Wellington on 27th September. Trainees from Fleetwood Nautical Campus will be demonstrating the game in conjunction with The Marine Society & Sea Cadets – and hoping to entice some of the guests onboard to try their hand at beating them.
Further details on the game can be obtained from www.theenterprisegame.com.
