The Celebration
To honour the contribution that the shipping industry makes, on September 27th 2007, the Honourable Company of Master Mariners and the International Maritime Pilots Association will jointly host a celebration to mark World Maritime Day onboard the HQS Wellington. A number of VIP guests will be visiting the event throughout the day and these will include the Secretary General of the International Maritime Organization.
The aim of the event is to showcase the contribution made by UK based institutions in support of the international shipping industry. The event will complement the IMO’s World Maritime Day theme of the response to the current environmental challenges. The maritime industry is ideally placed to respond to those challenges as it is the most environmentally friendly mode of transportation and has a major role to play in the generation of renewable energy.
The Wellington’s Court Room will be the venue for a series
of static displays by maritime organisations. In addition, practical displays
will be held both on deck and afloat alongside. It is anticipated that a
number of vessels will be berthed alongside, including the Yantlet,
a Port of London Authority survey vessel, an RNLI lifeboat and a vessel from
the Royal Navy.

Due to being limited to a maximum of 250 people onboard the ship at any one time, the event will not be open to the general public. Instead it will be open to invited guests from within the political and diplomatic arenas, the business community and the media.
